History

The Athens Montessori School celebrated its 30th Anniversary during the 2008-2009 school year. What began as one class of twenty students in a rented room grew into ten classes of 280 students, ages three to fourteen years. These ten classes are currently housed in seven landscaped buildings networked with three playscapes and a variety of gardens, a bog and a small, aquatic pond.

Warren and LaVonne McPherson founded the Athens Montessori School in August of 1978 and remain as school director and elementary school leader to this day. One staff member began this journey with them over 30 years ago and many other lead teachers have served the school for over twenty years. This combination of loyalty and experience has enabled the Athens Montessori School staff to generate a rich and unique learning experience in an authentic Montessori tradition of constructivist education.

Thanks to an enthusiastic body of parent volunteers over the years, Athens Montessori School has continued to grow and refine their facility and program while maintaining a moderate private school tuition rate.  Blending the strong training traditions of both the American Montessori Society and the Association Montessori International, the staff of Athens Montessori School collaborate regularly to sustain plans for continuous improvement and enrichment of the school curriculum and environment.  Today with the support of a learning specialist and expert guides in music, creative movement, Spanish, drama and physical education, the staff continue to strive for the whole development and individualized learning which are trademarks of Montessori education worldwide.
